Matt Anderson's Take
Poipu Beach Park is located in the Koloa area in south Kaua'i. It's made up of two beaches separated by a tombolo (a sand bar connecting an island to the mainland or to another island), Poipu Beach is on the east side and Waiohai Beach Park is on the west side where Marriott's Waiohai Beach Club is located.

Poipu Beach is hugely popular and will be absolutely packed on weekends, and still really busy on weekdays. The Travel Channel voted it as one of America's and the World's best beaches. Hmm. Well, that's all non-sense of course but they are correct as it is an excellent beach if crowds don't bother you.

The beach here is well protected from the open ocean so it's often a great place for swimming. The east side is even more protected and great for smaller kids. The less protected west side (still on the poipu beach side of the tombolo) is good for snorkeling if the ocean is calm.

Toss in bathrooms, picnic areas, showers, and a lifeguard and you have an all around great beach, and one that is perfect for families. If you aren't staying nearby, note that the parking can be really bad here so arrive early or try a weekday instead of a weekend. There are a lot of spots, but it does get crowded and they fill fast.

A great beach overall and a good family beach. This place really is the Waikiki of Kauai though so don't expect any peace or quiet here.

We really liked this beach and you can walk here from the Sheraton. It does get crowded sometimes but that didn't really bother us.

Very nice beach but this must be the most crowded beach on the island so we didn't spend much time here because of that.

Poipu Beach is a very popular beach for family fun. If you have small kids, the shallow swimming area is perfect. Get there early though if you have a favorite place that you like to sit on the beach because it gets crowded early. There are places across the street where you can buy beach food...but be prepared to share with the local chickens.

Very busy, crowded beach, lots of rock and coral and not easy to walk on but well worth the visit. Never saw so many fish at my feet in my life, as well as the turtle that popped up right beside me one day, and the monk seal that was on the beach another day. You can just stand and watch and be happy there. The angel fish were huge!

We came here on a weekday and it was still pretty busy. But it was a very beautiful beach and had an amazing area for the small kids and babies. It was sheltered by rocks and never got deeper than right above my knee. There was also quite a bit of ocean life in the rocks so that was very neat. I don't think I would like to come if it was more crowded than this. I can see why it is so popular, though.

On a weekend this place is like Kauai's Waikiki Beach. Super crowded but still a great beach.
