Full Description
Lagoon #3 at the Ko Olina Resort is located behind the Marriott's Ko Olina Beach Club and offers the same super protected waters as all four of the Ko Olina lagoons.

All of the 4 lagoons in Ko Olina are man made and nicely protected from the ocean by breakwaters so this makes them a great place for the kids as the surf will usually be low to nonexistent, though there are no lifeguards here. That also makes the snorkeling here pretty good on most days and you'll find all sorts of fish to view. The fish are a reminder that the lagoon is still open to the ocean so this has all of the potential dangers of any other beach in Hawaii as well.

There can be a stronger current near the breakwaters, especially the center opening where the water exits the lagoon for the ocean which is roped off so you know to stay away from it.

There is a lot of sand to play on here and a decent amount of grass (some with shade from trees) along with public showers, drinking fountains, and bathrooms. Everything is very well maintained because this is in the upscale Ko Olina Resort.

If it's too busy then try Ko Olina Lagoon 1 (Kahola Lagoon), Ko Olina Lagoon 2 (Honu Lagoon), or Ko Olina Lagoon 4 (Ulua Lagoon) because they're all very similar. All four of the Ko Olina lagoons are connected by a very nice concrete beach walk.

Like Ko Olina Lagoon 1 (Kahola Lagoon), I find that lagoon #3 gets crowded from all of the hotel guests that use it so you may be better at lagoon Ko Olina Lagoon 2 (Honu Lagoon) or Ko Olina Lagoon 4 (Ulua Lagoon). The parking situation here is pretty bad with around 18 public spots in the lot. Arrive early if you want a spot, after that it may be tough to come by and impossible on a weekend as I often see several cars waiting in a line for the next available spot.

One nice thing about Lagoon 3 is that there are some food options and a mini-mart that you can walk to in the Marriott hotel and they also offer great shave ice at a nearby Marriott run hut (from the center of the beach, follow the cement ramp up into the Marriott property).

On the flip side, one annoying thing is the attempt that somebody at Ko Olina seems to be making to get a few more dollars out of beachgoers. And I mean a few more dollars quite literally. You can now rent a beach chair and umbrella here on one side of the lagoon. I never see anyone actually renting these so I can imagine that they're making less than $20 a day with this setup and have taken up a huge portion of the beach with their chairs. This isn't part of the Marriott either, this is something Ko Olina seems to be doing or a third party with Ko Olina's permission. They need to close shop on this nickle-and-dime non-sense! Talk about taking a world class resort destination and cheapening it up overnight.

During the winter months this is a 4 star beach for sure. Unfortunately, it either wasn't designed correctly or with the combination of a lot of summertime visitors we find that the water quality gets a little on the gross side during the hotter months. The problem will likely go away with cooler winter waters which also bring stronger currents to clean the lagoon out but come back in the hot summer months. If the water isn't to your liking try Ko Olina Lagoon 2 (Honu Lagoon) or Ko Olina Lagoon 4 (Ulua Lagoon) instead.

Lagoon 3 is a nice lagoon. A bonus is that you can get shave ice from the Marriott's Beach Club. But having the hotel at this beach makes it very crowded.

Until the Marriott or the Ko Olina Management find a way to clean this lagoon, I will maintain a 1-star rating (since I can't give it 0). People come here from all around the world to swim in pristine Hawaiian ocean water - but lagoon 3 smells like stale water at the bottom of a fisherman's boat. Lagoon 3 is cloudy, and not refreshing as are the other lagoons.  Can't see a fish or turtle - they are like me and don't want to swim in it.  If the powers that be can engineer the lagoon to provide better water circulation, I'll give it the 5 stars that it should deserve.

One of the best beaches I've ever been too. Just a perfect beach and calm waters right outside of our hotel.

Another amazing lagoon at Ko Olina! Just as good as the others but has more tourists from the hotel. The advantage is that the hotel has food, drinks, and shave ice if you need to eat or drink in a pinch (and for a hefty price).
