Full Description
Duke Kahanamoku Lagoon is a manmade lagoon that was renovated a few years back and is now a very popular place to swim and play around. It's located right next to Kahanamoku Beach @ Waikiki and the Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort in Honolulu on the island of O'ahu. It is fully open to the public even if you're not staying at the resort here.

It's a popular spot, mainly by guests of the Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort, but you'll find plenty of parking between the lagoon and boat harbor. The spots along the lagoon and the lot at the far south end will provide free parking while the lots along the harbor will cost you a few dollars so watch where you park.

It's not connected to the ocean at all but is salt water and is filtered (like a pool) so it's clean and a great place to swim and play. The water is a little cloudy but not too bad. You can sometimes find some shady spots, depending on the time of day, from the tall hotel buildings.

You can also rent all types of kayaks, stand up paddleboards, and other beach items. Another plus would be the easy access to the hotels and their various food offerings, for a price of course. You might also find a food truck in the parking lot at the south end for a cheaper bite to eat.

This is a nice, peaceful lagoon most of the time. Sometimes it gets crowded and then it's less desireable. For most, you're better off at the real beach with a real ocean, but if you have kids and want something more controlled and calmer this is a great choice.

I stay at the Ilikai every year and the Duke Kahanamoku lagoon I look at every day. Nothing better than waking up and looking at that view! I walk and enjoy my coffee down there every day and I Sunbake there during the day. Lots of family's and children enjoying the watersports there part of the Hilton Hawaiian. Water is ok little cloudy lots of little fish but perfect if you don't want to go in the ocean. Great for the kids and families with little ones that want to enjoy the water. Ice cream places bars and the shrimp truck if your hungry so you don't really need to walk far. Night time is not great to walk around there near the car park and boat side few weirdos around just be careful and don't walk by yourself. Otherwise beautiful lagoon it's a must see! Beautiful views I love talking pictures there. Friday night fireworks are done there too so head down and watch them. A lot of fun.

We stayed at the Hilton Rainbow Tower in May 2015 and had quick, easy access to this lagoon. Even though it's in Waikiki, which can be crazy crowded, the lagoon is typically pretty quiet and relaxing. I was pleasantly surprised by that! The waters are calm, which make it great for Keiki, and it's a great way to get some practice on a stand-up paddle board before deciding to venture into the open waters of the ocean. Enjoy!

This is a neat little lagoon but the ocean is just a few feet away and much better. Don't really see the point in the lagoon though maybe for small children.
