Sand Island State Recreation Area - Beaches On Oahu Honolulu, Hawaii

With a name like Sand Island you can't help but assume this is going to be an amazing place with an amazing beach, right? Unfortunately, most would probably agree that isn't the case here.

It's an enormous park area with ball fields, campsites, tons of parking, showers, bathrooms, and plenty of shady areas. The park portion here is a peaceful place to hangout during the week because there won't be many people here at all then. But it's not in the best shape, just another park that isn't being maintained very well.

On weekends you can expect to see locals and probably nothing but locals here because this just isn't a place tourists visit.

As for beaches, Sand Island has two of them. One is fairly long and the other is a small man made lagoon with a breakwater rock wall so it remains fairly calm and protected from the open ocean.

They aren't horrible beaches but really nothing special either and you'd really be better off at nearby Ala Moana Beach & State Recreation Area or even The Beaches Of Waikiki.
