Ala Moana Beach State Recreation Area - Beaches On Oahu Honolulu, Hawaii

Ala Moana Beach is a very large park area with a beach that is very well protected from ocean waves by the offshore reef. It's located directly across the street from Ala Moana Center in Honolulu on the island of O'ahu. It's also right next to the lovely Magic Island (Aina Moana).

Ala Moana Beach is a great alternative to the insanity going in Waikiki (see Waikiki Guide) though it can and will get very crowded here on weekends as the locals flood in. There is plenty of parking all along the main road and in a lot at the east end, though on weekends plenty may not be the case.

There is a huge grassy area for a picnic or playing and the sandy area is quite long and wide as well. The sand is closer to powder than it is to regular beach sand but the big complaint we have is just how much rock, coral, and shell debris there is in the sand here. We don't understand why they don't run the beach cleaning machine over this beach every hundred years weather it needs it or not! The only other very minor complaint is that you get a minor amount of aircraft noise from planes taking off at nearby Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL).

Because the nearshore waters are so protected, the water is very calm and perfect for swimmers and smaller kids. There is a concession stand on site as well as lifeguards, bathrooms, showers, benches and tables, a walking path, exercise equipment, and tennis courts. It's really a great beach all around and one you really should spend a day at.
