Matt Anderson's Take
Pila'a Beach is another great hidden beach found in the Kilauea on Kaua'i. This one will require a good 20-30 minute hike to reach while you navigate your way down about 150 feet in elevation. From the Kuhio Highway (Hwy 56), turn onto North Waiakalua Road. Near the end of the road, follow the dirt road/path on your left.

Park legally and take the steep trail on your right that leads to the beach, making sure you aren't trespassing on private property. The trail that heads to the left leads to Waiakalua Beach which is a much easier beach to reach and the one we suggest heading towards unless you really enjoy a challenge.

Not only is the trail to get here very rocky, but the beach here is a bit rocky too so swimming isn't great here and should only be attempted when the ocean is calm. If you get in trouble there are no lifeguards to help you here and probably not anybody else to even call for help.

If you're looking for a hidden, secret, and secluded beach this is a good bet. You'll probably have it all to yourself. Getting here isn't for most people though and the hike down isn't the easiest.

I'm less concerned with safety than I am with experiencing the rugged beauty of Kauai. It's not that I'm not careful, but I want to visit the hidden spots that make this island unique. This is not a trail to take the little ones. This beach is for the adventurer that shares my view. Be careful on the trail if it's muddy - you're likely to fall on your okole.
