St. Joseph's Church at Kamalo, built in 1876, is one of the two remaining churches built by Father Damien. The other church he built was Our Lady of Seven Sorrows / Kaluaaha Church.
Father Damien was a Catholic priest from Belgium and is best known for coming to Moloka'i and helping the many sufferers of Hansen's Disease (also known as leprosy). He is best known for his work at the Kalaupapa Leper Colony (today known as Kalaupapa National Historical Park) established by King Kamehameha V. Father Damien ministered to and cared for those at the colony suffering from leprosy. He also died of the disease.
There is a statue of Father Damien outside the church which is usually covered with leis out of respect. It's a simple church in a rural area, but it's worth a visit and a moment to reflect on the history of Moloka'i.
