The Royal Hawaiian, also known as the Pink Palace of the Pacific, is hard to miss when you are in the Waikiki area. Not because it's overly tall or large but simply because it's pink. Very pink. And it's an icon of Honolulu and Waikiki.

It's also old, very old, as it first opened in 1927! Not to worry, it's old in a good way and keeps up with the times quite nicely so you'll enjoy all of the modern amenities you'd expect of a luxury hotel.

The resort has 528 rooms and suites and is right on Royal-Moana Beach @ Waikiki which is an excellent area of Waikiki Beach. The property is very nice and has an overall luxury theme going on but doesn't feel snobby. On the flip side, it also doesn't feel like a family hotel. Families are certainly welcome here and you will see them, but this place has a higher end feel that's perfect for couples.

The main pool here is fairly small and boring but don't worry as there is a second pool area (shared with the Sheraton Waikiki) which includes a slide and hot tub which will be better for kids.

This is a Starwood Hotels & Resorts property so they'll be tacking on a daily resort fee of $36.65 (see Hotel & Resort Fees & Taxes). That fee will give you free valet parking (Tipping is extra), free internet, and a few other add-ons.

Overall, it's a very nice property and one worth checking out even if you aren't staying here. Take a stroll through this beautiful "palace" and enjoy the amazing views and fun ambiance it offers. You'll also want to stop by and possibly enjoy a Mai Tai at the world famous Mai Tai Bar.

Some fun facts: There have been several movies and TV series have been filmed here such as The Black Camel starring Charlie Chan, Big Jim McLain starring John Wayne, Pearl Harbor starring Ben Affleck, Punch Drunk Love starring Adam Sandler, Blood and Orchids TV miniseries, Pearl TV miniseries, and Mad Men to name a few.
