Chun's Reef Beach is a good spot for beginner level surfing and stand up paddleboard (SUP) when the ocean is calmer. If the ocean is a bit on the angry side, then the surfing (etc) is best left to those who really know what they're doing.
You'll find a good amount of street parking on the mauka (mountain) side of the Kamehameha Highway (see our directions page) and from there just cross the street (carefully!) and you'll find a lovely beach waiting for you.
The sandy area is nice and the water is pretty clear and blue here but some of the shore areas are a bit rocky so the water is actually a bit better to play in if you head to your right (northeast) which is then Kawailoa Beach.
Since there is a lifeguard at Chun's Reef Beach, talk with them before getting in the water. They'll be able to update you on current conditions and which parts are safe and which aren't.
