The Plum Trail is located in the Polipoli Springs State Recreation Area in Maui's upcountry. This is a 1.7 mile long (one way, so 3.4 mile round trip) out and back style hiking trail.

The trail is of moderate difficulty and has an overall elevation gain of around 600 feet. You'll have some nice views considering you're starting at 6,200 feet above sea level.

To get here, see our directions page. The trailhead starts at the old Civilian Conservation Corp. area and the Polipoli Campground area. This requires a drive up Waipoli Road which will turn to a dirt road and thus should only be attempted with a 4x4 vehicle.

If you're looking for a longer hike, the Plum Trail connects with the Redwood Trail, Haleakala Ridge, and Polipoli Trail to form a 5.3 mile long loop trail.

As for the Plum Trail name, you'll be seeing a actual plum trees along the trail which often have fruit on them in the summer. You'll also hike through a forest of redwood trees, ash trees, and sugi trees.

As with any hike, be sure to read up on Hiking Safety & Essentials and remember that temperatures at these higher elevations are often much cooler than at sea level. Dogs are allowed on this trail but must be leashed at all times. Wearing bright clothing is suggested as hunters may be in this area and hunting off the trail.
