Not far from the hotels on the Kohala Coast is a popular beach park with both visitors and locals. With very fine white sand and beautiful turquoise water, it's no wonder this beach is loved by everyone who visits. Kua Bay / Manini'owali Beach marks the northern end of Kekaha Kai State Park.
It's one of the newer beach parks on the Big Island with roadside parking, restrooms, showers, water fountains, a picnic table, and a nice path down to the beach. There are often crowds here all day until sunset. But the convenience of the facilities and proximity to Kailua-Kona make this a desirable spot to visit. There isn't any tree cover here so wear sunscreen, a hat, and perhaps an umbrella to help Protect Yourself From Sunburn & Skin Cancer.
You'll see boogie boarders here, but be aware the water can be treacherous during high surf, especially during the winter months. Many families visit here, but it's always watch your keiki when they're in or near water. When the water is calm, usually in the summer months when the ocean is generally calmer, there is great snorkeling to be had. Sea turtles can be spotted at the rocky section toward the north end of the beach.
Parking is limited, so it's best to arrive early. The road dead ends and there is a circle to drop off your family before you go back and look for parking along the road. Note that surf boards, stand up paddle boards, canoes, kayaks, jet skis, boats, and even windsurfers are prohibited here. The park is closed on Wednesdays.
To find this beach, drive along Highway 19 and look for signs for Kua Bay / Manini'owali Beach or see our map and pinpoint for exact directions and location.
