Kohanaiki Beach Park is better known as Pine Trees Beach and gets its nickname of Pine Trees from some surfers that thought the mangroves were pine trees. You'll find it in the Kailua-Kona area on the westside of Hawaii's Big Island.
Swimming is not recommended as the ocean bottom is very rocky. On the other hand, surfing here can be excellent and this is where some of Hawaii's surfers will hang out. Pine Trees Beach is also great for camping and barbecues but note that you must have a permit to camp overnight.
Up until recently, this was a difficult beach to get to and required a 4x4. As part of the agreement with the developer of the housing community and Kohanaiki Golf Club that backs up to this beach, a paved road was put in along with facilities and over 120 parking spots. This is a proper beach park now that anyone can access easily.
