Honaunau Bay is better known as Two Steps from the two natural steps in the lava flow into and out of the water. You'll find Honaunau Bay in the Captain Cook area on the west side of Hawaii's Big Island.
Two Steps is an excellent place for snorkeling when the ocean is calm. Keep in mind that it is a popular place so expect some crowds, especially on weekends.
Don't expect tons of sandy beach here as the bits that are sandy are fairly small and the other parts will be quite rocky but this is more of a snorkeling beach. All of the rocky parts make for some really interesting little tide pools which are fun to look through and explore.
What's also nice is that the coves here are fairly well protected from the open ocean so it can also be a great place to snorkel with kids.
