Pu'u Ualaka'a State Wayside Park is located in Honolulu on the island of O'ahu but it's around 1,000 feet above sea level. To get here you'll take the amazing Tantalus and Round Top Hill Drive which is about a 20-30 minute drive north of the Waikiki area (see Waikiki Guide).

The drive alone is worth the trip but stopping at the park is a must because of the amazing panoramic views you get from the viewing area up there. If you get car sick easily as a passenger then you'll want to be the driver or take some motion sickness medication as this is a very twisty route.

Parking is free and they're usually open from around 7am in the morning to just after sunset. Once parked, it's a very short and paved walk to the lookout area, known as Tantalus Lookout, so get your camera ready because you'll get some amazing shots from here.

You'll see east shores with Diamond Head State Monument all the way to the south shores including Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) and Pearl Harbor (see Pearl Harbor & USS Arizona Memorial) from up here. The viewing area is completely fenced in and safe as well so you should have no fear of falling if heights normally freak you out.

The park offers some nice and fairly easy hiking trails as well (no bikes are allowed on the trails) so even kids can likely handle these short hikes. If it just rained it might be muddy and not the best time for a hike. The park offers restrooms, picnic areas, garbage cans, and water fountains.
