Matt Anderson's Take
Smith's Kauai Garden Luau / Tropical Paradise is a pretty unique place and it's really several things all in one. You'll find them along the Wailua River in the Kapaa area on the east side of Kaua'i. If you've never experienced a luau before be sure to read What Is A Luau along with our Kauai, Hawaii Luau Guide.

The main attraction here is the Smith Family Garden Luau which is what you would think of when you think of a Hawaiian style luau. We're talking about a feast of kalua pig cooked in an imu oven, Poi, teriyaki beef, chicken, and sides.

As you enjoy your dinner you'll watch Hula dances and hear songs, watch a Samoan fire knife dance, and then a few of your fellow diners get pulled up on stage and give everyone else a laugh. Beyond the luau is Smith's Fern Grotto Wailua River Cruise which is a slow boat tour (about 80 minutes) that takes you along two miles of the Wailua River. It's an open air boat with excellent views along the way. The boat will take you to Fern Grotto landing where you'll go on a short nature walk through the rainforest.

There's also a 30 acre botanical and cultural garden here. Enjoy a mile or so of meandering pathways that are surrounded by all sorts of lush, tropical vegetation. Some of the fruits you'll see growing include breadfruit, star fruit, and jackfruit. But wait, there's more! They also offer various wedding packages here too. So, if you're ready to tie the knot this could be the place to do it. Like I said, it's a pretty unique place with quite a few different things going on.

We had this on our list of must see and do and was not disappointed. Smiths Kauai Garden Luau/Tropical Paradise is a wonderful place to go to do a luau the show and dinner was really good. Loved how they included us into the show, my mother and father were celebrating their anniversary and were called up on stage to do a special hula dance. They were able to entertain both adults and children which is very nice for families. Will do this luau every time we go, well worth the price.

One of the best luaus on the islands. Run by the same family for years, they really make you feel welcomed into their family. Food was delicious and show was awesome.

Smith's Kauai Garden Luau / Tropical Paradise has so much to offer this was our second luau to go to and must say enjoyed this one so very much more. Upon entering the luau you are lei'd. Kalua pig cooking is part of the experience and it is so yummy melted in your mouth.

The luau had so many choices to pick from and was so delicious, we walked away full and content. We did do some walking around after and before the luau in the Botanical Garden, it was so pretty. The hula dancers did a great job. Everyone was so friendly and we left with the aloha feeling. The price is steep but worth it and would recommend it to others.

My first experience for a Luau and Smith's Kauai Garden Luau did not disappoint. You arrive and are greeted by friendly people that welcome you with a beautiful shell lei and escort you to the trams. The tram ride takes you on a tour of the beautiful botanicals garden. We had the most hilarious team guide that told us funny anecdotes of each location and had us giggling through the entire ride.

You then have some free time to wander about and explore the garden on your own until you go and find a place for supper. We traveled with a seven month old baby and the staff were really helpful and found us a fantastic place to sit that would accommodate a highchair. They touch on many important traditions at a Luau.

The food was phenomenal with an interactive show during the meal. I even got a lesson on how to hula dance. The show following dinner is amazing and the costumes are beautiful. A fantastic and entertaining evening.

I really loved this luau! We started our Smiths adventure by getting picked up by a free shuttle from our hotel on Kapaa. The Fern Grotto boat rides are right near the entrance to the luau. We took the last cruise of the day to the fern grotto (3:30pm I believe) and when the cruise is done we went straight over to the luau.

When you arrive you take a photo that you can buy later on the evening. Then you get on a shuttle and they drive you through their massive grounds that are themed for different places (like Easter Island, Japan, Samoa, etc) then they drop you off at the luau. If you have a party of six or more you will have a spot reserved for you with your name on the table. For all others it's open seating.

Then they do the imu ceremony and the bar opens. There is music and hula happening on the stage all through dinner. The food was really good! I was impressed! Large variety of items with traditional Hawaiian food, fresh fruit, desserts and this is the first luau where I liked the poi (so be sure to try it even if you have not liked it in the past).

After dinner you take a short stroll over to the open air theatre (this is when your photos are available for purchase) and find a seat. The show was great. There was hula and dancing from all the pacific island cultures. Really well done.

Then it's a short walk to the parking lot where our shuttle bus was waiting to take us back to the hotel. I would recommend this luau to everyone!

** I decided to visit the botanical garden portion of Smiths Tropical Paradise and I wanted to add a separate review for that **

We visited Smith's Tropical Paradise gardens on a weekday. It was a lovely way to spend an hour or two. They sell birdseed at the ticket booth when you get your tickets for $.50 a bag. Be sure to grab a few for your stroll, especially if you have kids. We strolled leisurely at our own pace, checking out the beautiful grounds and feeding the birds. The plants and trees have signs so you know what you are looking at. It was a great day, the kids had a good time and we got some good pictures.

Smith's Luau has so much to offer. The buffet is excellent, try the kalua pig cooked on site in an imu, underground oven. It's part of the ceremony before the luau. Hawaiian music and hula performed on stage while you dine. As part of the entertainment, some customers attempt to hula with guidance for a performer on stage. All always funny to watch.

When dinner is finished take a short walk to the stage. Enjoy the story that's told through dance about Hawaii.

You can purchase show-only tickets for $15.
Complimentary shuttles available from Wailua area hotels and condos.

During the day you can stroll along the paths of the garden or take a boat tour to Fern Grotto from Wailua Marina State Park. You will be entertained on the cruise with hula, talk story, and song.

We LOVE Smith's Garden Luau! We have gone to luaus at Smith's on both of our last two trips to Kauai. The gardens are beautiful and the luau is fabulous! When you arrive in the gardens they take you through the garden in a tram guided tour. The guides are very informative about the plants grown there and there are many beautiful plants to be seen.

After the tram you have time to stroll through the garden while waiting for the imu ceremony to begin. The raising of the pig from the pit, the dinner show, and the whole buffet is fabulous. Then it is time for the luau show that tells the history of Polynesia. The whole night is a memorable experience and not to be missed!
