Matt Anderson's Take
Iao Valley means "cloud supreme" in Hawaiian and is pronounced "EE-ow". It's a very lush valley just a few miles west of Wailuku.

It's a nice place to come for a short hike, to take pictures, and just enjoy the beauty of it all. If you've never been here before I think it's worth a stop to see.

Parking fee: $5.00 per car. No fee for Hawaii residents.

I took my wife here for the first time and she really enjoyed it. The hike was great with lots of beautiful spots to take pictures. The valley is so lush and green and just so hard to believe that there are places like this that is so peaceful and quiet.

I can't imagine visiting Maui and not seeing Iao. We come here on every trip just to walk around and enjoy nature. Not to be missed.

This is an incredible park and lets you see the wet, lush side of Maui through various trails and hikes and lookout points.

Although very beautiful and lush, and a wonderful historical lesson to be had, it does lack some of the "umph" of some other places you can visit on the island. The amenities are limited, but it is also such an amazing place to be one with nature and to be able to mix more with locals. There are a couple of hiking paths and a good place to go if you only have a couple of hours to spare. Parking can be difficult as it gets so crowded. The ancient temple and picnic area before it are definitely a must see as you are driving into the park. You can smell the awesome aromas of the locals cooking for family gatherings. Also a wonderful place to get some fresh fruit and banana bread at the stand(s) along the way. Quite delicious!

The valley is very lush and beautiful. The year we were there it was very dry on the island but it was still green here. Takes a little walking to go up to the top. Just take your time. It is worth it. Walk down along the stream to get a different view from down below. We were there a couple of weeks ago and the road to it is closed. As of February 2017.

This was one of my most favorite places to visit, loved it so much the first vacation trip we visited again the second trip and will visit it every trip. The day we went was so clear and sunny but it can be a little nippy early in the morning so take a jacket.

Loved walking around and seeing the many views, flowers, plants, and birds. It was a maze of beauty, I could camp out right in the middle of it all and be quite happy. Loved seeing the feral cats and on our second trip a couple of local ladies were there feeding the new little ones. A must see, well worth seeing.

It took many attempts to get a day that was clear for us to see the needle. When we finally made it on a clear day we were not disappointed. Hard walk up the many stairs for me with recent knee surgery but doable. Interesting history. Well marked and information easily read.

We visited this park this morning and it is absolutely stunning! I saw a picture of it on Pinterest and I honestly had doubts about how beautiful it would be. Upon actually seeing it, I can tell you it's even prettier than the pictures show! Very grand, and just rich green plants everywhere. I only wish that there were people around that could tell you more about the park. I was told Jurassic park was filmed there, but upon further research, I'm not sure if this is true... Regardless, it is a beautiful spot and you definitely feel like a dinosaur could be lurking down in those mountains somewhere. Definitely worth the visit!
