Amazing hidden beach. Not a place to swim due to dangerous currents.

Ka'aka'aniu Beach, which is more commonly called Larsen's Beach, is an amazing hidden beach in the Kilauea area on the north shore of Kaua'i.

To get here, from the Kuhio Highway head onto Koolau Road and then turn onto the very bumpy Larsen Beach Road (dirt) and follow it to the end where you'll find room to park. Head towards the marked trailhead and follow it down to the beach. The hike down isn't bad but takes around 10 minutes and is steep in parts so probably not best for smaller kids.

The beach down here is beautiful and the water can be very blue and clear which makes for a great place to hang out, relax, or do some beach combing (sea glass can be common here).

While we know the right side can be a good place to snorkel if the ocean is very calm we don't recommend it simply because it's so dangerous here. Swimming here is bad due to the rocky bottom but also because of the Pakala Channel which can cause powerful rip currents that can pull you out into the open ocean.

That channel is on the left (northwest) side of the beach and you should stay far away. Seriously, this is no joke.

Even if you can't go in the water here, it's still worth a trip down to this one as long as you're comfortable with the short hike down. It's a great beach and you'll probably have it all (or mostly) to yourself. Note that there are no facilities here.
