Matt Anderson's Take
When you drive through the little town of Haleiwa, as your approaching the bridge, you'll see a line of people waiting to taste Matsumoto's legendary shave ice. Why is it so popular? Matsumoto has perfected the method for creating very fine ice that melts in your mouth like snow. The syrups are homemade which adds to the novelty. But beyond the hype you read about in the tourist books, shave ice is refreshing when the weather is warm and your touring around the island. The employees do their best to pump out shave ice, but the line never seems to subside.

Matsumoto serves good shave ice, and if you are on the North Shore, you can check this off to the "been there, done that" column. But for the true shave ice connoisseur, you need to try Ailana Shave Ice in Honolulu.

Located in the Haleiwa Store Lots.

In addition to perfect shave ice, they have souvenirs. Always crowded, but well worth the wait.

Great place! Perfect shave ice I have had since being on the island. Yes there is a line but very much worth waiting for.

This is, by far, the BEST shave ice anywhere on the islands. This place has been here forever - years and years. The line often goes out the door at any given time of day. It is well worth the wait. It is very small inside, and also has some souvenir type items to look at as you wait. The shave ice is very nice, and options of ice cream at bottom are available. If you are going to Oahu, it is worth the drive to the north shore to Matsumoto's.

If you go to the North Shore, be sure you don't miss Matsumoto Shave Ice! It's the best on the island in a quaint little store. Several choices are available on the flavors, with quite a few more choices than the other places. Haleiwa is a good old fashioned Hawaiian town.

I am not sure how I am going to survive without shave ice when I leave Hawaii. Matsumoto's was definitely up there with the best of many the shave ice places I paid visits to throughout the islands! I knew it would be my last one before I left and really went over the top and had condensed milk AND ice cream along with my favorite flavors! Divine.

If you're going to get shaved ice, you HAVE to get it from Matsumoto's. They have every flavor you can imagine and the ice is shaved so thin, it's almost like ice cream. You are guaranteed to wait in line, but it's worth it. There's a reason that this is President Obama's favorite shave ice place on island. Definitely check it out... and don't be scared of the line. They move it super fast.

This was my first experience having shave ice on the Hawaiian islands. I honestly wasn't wowed and I'm pretty sure it was the only time I got shave ice when I was there. I've since returned to Hawaii and have had other shave ice and have discovered that all shave ice is not created equal! I was told by a local to go to Matsumoto's for authentic shave ice, that's why I was so surprised when I wasn't impressed. I thought maybe it was a local thing and I didn't get it. I kinda just felt like it was ice in a cup, gritty with some juice poured over it. I've since learned that it should be snow like, and the juice is actually a think syrup and should coat alllllllll of the ice, not just the outside. I think there is value in stopping by this "original" spot for shave ice, but I don't think it should be your only impression of it. Try other spots too!
