Krispy Kreme Doughnuts - Restaurants On Maui Kahului, Hawaii

Krispy Kreme restaurants serve up doughnuts and coffee and at one point they were one of those places you would hear about or maybe get to taste if you took a trip somewhere that had one. Sort of a special treat. In the early 2000's they expanded like crazy and were suddenly all over the place, making them far less special. By 2005 they were in trouble and many stores shut down and this location on Maui seems to have made it through those troubled times.

For many, Krispy Kreme tends to be one of those places you either love and join the cult or just kind of wonder what all of the fuss is about. I'm on the side of wondering what all the fuss is about. I've eaten many Krispy Kreme donuts over many years and I always fine that they're certainly good, but I don't know that they're any better than any average fresh made doughnut would be.

The big draw is usually the Original Glazed doughnut and the best way to eat them is when you see the "Hot Now" neon sign lit up which means they'll be fresh made. They are super soft and literally melt in your mouth. They're good, but any better than an average doughnut? Not for me.

They offer a few other types of doughnuts as well but the variety is usually pretty weak and those other types are often far less fresh.

This location is close to the airport so it's a great place to stop if you arrived on Maui in the morning and need a quite bite to eat (and drink) to get going and I would recommend it for that and would eat here again. It's fairly cheap, about $1 per doughnut (at least when buying a half dozen or more). Kids will like watching the doughnuts run on the conveyor belt through the glaze.
