A nice overall beach park. But there is that Hawaiian Nation issue...

Features
• Facilities: Bathrooms • Facilities: Grassy Area • Facilities: Picnic Tables • Facilities: Showers • Type: Shady
• Sand Type: Powder • Parking: Good / Plenty • Good For: Sunrises

Getting to Waihee Beach Park is easy, just follow Halewaiu Road passed the golf course and to the end where there is parking.

Waihee Beach could be better than it is but the sand is very dirty and full of beach debris (so it might be fun to do some beachcombing here). The water here is okay, though nothing spectacular, and swimming can be okay when the ocean is calm.

The park area does have some amenities like a shower, bathroom, some picnic tables, and a grassy area. It's a fairly average beach with a good set of amenities.

One oddity of this beach, that may or may not be there when you go, are the large signs that read "This property is under the jurisdiction of the reinstated Hawaiian Nation" and these signs make you feel like you don't belong here.

The signs will be right along Halewaiu Road, in the forested area along the road, and even in the beach park. We talked with one of the locals who lives here. Yes, several people seem to live here in tents in the forested area. His name was Jason and he was quite friendly and he explained how Hawaiian land was taken away from the Hawaiians and they're basically claiming it back as their own. Seems pretty ridiculous and then we remember our history and this is basically how the USA was born.

I don't know what sort of legal case they have or if the county is basically just too busy to care about what they're doing here. I'm not looking to get into that debate at all, just passing along what we saw here and letting you know what it feels like here and the bottom line is that I think many tourists would feel uncomfortable here. Considering the beach and park are just average I would suggest passing on this one and leave it for the locals.

If you want to try it out then go for it, have some respect for the people there and their cause and you could have a great time and maybe learn something.
