Honokohau Bay isn't a typical sandy beach as it's only made up of rocks and small boulders, which is also why it's called Boulder Beach.
Since there is no sand at all here, it's not really a place you'd want to stop for a swim. The Honokohau Stream runs through this area and empties into the ocean and it's not even really a pretty stream. Streams, at least when running, often lead to murky water which sharks love (see Shark Attacks In Hawaii) and generally make the water less pleasant to be in.
There is some potentially good surfing here in the winter months but that's for more advanced surfers. When things are calm and the stream isn't running, there can be some good snorkeling in the bay but remember that there are no lifeguards here. Even then, you're far better off at Honolua Bay.
Honokohau Bay is easy to find near mile marker 36 on the Honoapiilani Hwy, or just check our directions page for the exact location. There is a small juice stand here so it can a good stop for a drink. Of course, if you want to stop for some excellent pictures it's certainly a photogenic location!
