Full Description
Ho'okipa Beach Park, which includes Ho'okipa Lookout, is one of the top places for windsurfing on the entire planet, with many who will argue that it's the best place overall (or at least in the USA). This isn't for novice windsurfers, but a place where the pros come to play and compete.

To get to Ho'okipa Beach, which is located in the town of Paia on the northshore of Maui, follow the Hana Highway (36) to mile marker 9 and you'll see it because there's really nothing else here. Because it's a one way in and one way out parking situation, you'll actually drive to the far east end of the beach area where you can turn in. Our map / directions page will get you here with GPS precision.

There is an upper gravel lot where you can park if you want a great vantage point to take pictures or watch the windsurfers do their thing, this area is called Ho'okipa Lookout. There is plenty of parking up here.

There is a second parking area if you follow the one way road west which will take you down to sea level. There is a ton of parking down there as well, but it's pretty much always crowded so finding a spot isn't always easy.

While windsurfing is king here, you'll also find plenty of regular surfing going on as well as well a lot of stand up paddle boarders in the water.

The shoreline is full of reef so it's not really a beach where you'd come to swim or play, it's really all about the surfing and windsurfing here.

This is an amazing place to come and watch the pros wind surf. They make it look so easy. It's like watching Top Gun and thinking "yea, I could fly a fighter jet, that's what I want to do with my life". It's like that but for wind surfing.

This was our surprise beach that we just happened to come upon one evening. Wow, it is a beauty. Can get quite crowded, but well worth the wait for finding a parking space during top hours. When we went the first time, it was in the early evening and right when the turtles were coming on the shore. This is a wonderful place to learn more about them and to watch the surfers in the background. The waves are strong here and although we have not been in winter, we hear it is an awesome sight to see surfers during the winter months when the waves are much bigger. There are food trucks and stands and at the upper level parking you can sometimes see artists selling their goods. We very much enjoy going there and mingling with the locals.

A must see beach on Maui. Ho'okipa Beach Park is where the professionals come to challenge the wind and the sea. The windsurfing capital of Maui there are always colorful sails dotting the surf. I love to grab lunch in nearby Paia and sit on the beach and watch the show. Also a great beach to watch turtles come ashore to sun themselves.

As a resident of Maui many years, I visit Ho'okipa often as it is one of the best spots on the island of Maui to watch surfers out on the water. Great spot to park elevated above the water for a perfect view. Occasionally you will see turtles laying on the beach soaking up the sun, local vendors selling handmade items and turquoise blue waves barreling in at high surf. One of the first spots I take visiting friends when they arrive on the island.

This is a great place to just hang out and watch the windsurfers on a sunny, breezy day! We happened to be passing in a car and noticed the brightly colored sails and stopped off to check it out. It is quite a spectacular sight. Take a picnic, find a nice spot and enjoy!

I had the chance to hang out at Ho'okipa Beach for a little bit. It was great to see the many surfers out in the ocean catching waves. And I had the privilege of seeing at least 17 sea turtles laying out in the sand! And on top of that, there were whales out in the ocean spouting water out through their blowholes. It was such a cool experience to witness! I can't wait to go back and hope I see all of that again.
