You'll find this little gem in the North Shore Marketplace shopping mall which is located in the north shore town of Haleiwa.
It's a small little restaurant with a few tables inside and a few outside and they're only open for breakfast and lunch.
We went for lunch and ordered up some Old School Pig Sandwiches which are Kalua pig, guava bbq sauce, Hawaiian slaw, and caramelized onions all on a toasted french roll and served with Maui style chips for $9.00. The fresh squeezed lemonade ($3.25) is tasty but a bit pricey for the size; the same can be said for the yummy but small milkshakes ($6).
The sandwich was delicious. Period. The guava bbq sauce and the perfectly cooked and shredded pork are amazingly good and tender. The price for the sandwich with chips isn't too bad but the sandwich is a tiny bit on the small side if you're really hungry. That's a minor complaint but it just was too small so I have to take half a star off for that.
On our last visit they upsold me on adding avocado on my sandwich. Sounded like a good idea but they forgot to put it on. It was only after I left and saw the receipt that I paid for it but never got it so that's pretty annoying. Better quality control would be nice.
Anyhow, I see the light now and have been converted into the religion that is Kono's, even if I'm not ready to get a pig tattooed on my body or even buy any of the pig themed merchandise they'd love to sell you.
