We've eaten at several other Wolfgang Puck restaurants (including their express chain) and have always had good food and a good experience. When we found this place we found some good reviews, some average reviews, and more than enough bad reviews to worry us a bit! The problem with some review sites is that you end up with all sorts of ratings and information that sometimes are outdated so we like to go in and find the truth. Good, bad, or ugly, the truth will be told.
We ordered a fish and chips plate along with a chicken aioli sandwich that I have had several times at other Wolfgang Puck Express locations on the mainland so I had something to compare to.
The prices here, with both the everything-is-expensive-in-Hawaii theory and everything-on-Waikiki-is-even-more-expensive theory being factored in, seemed quite reasonable. The fish and chips were $12.95 and the chicken sandwich was $9.95 with an extra $1.95 for fries on the side. Sodas cost us $1.80 each, quite a deal compared to the $4.00 prices some restaurants now charge.
After ordering you get a pager and go sit while they cook the food and then collect your food when the pager goes off. In our case, it felt like it took awhile to cook it but then again this is real food being prepared as you order it (more or less) and not a fast food burger joint.
The fish and chips were very tasty, well cooked, and had a perfectly flaky deep fried batter on them. The chicken aioli sandwich was quite good as well, had very fresh tasting ingredients, and was on a tasty roll. It was quite good but not as flavorful as it had been at other locations. I'm chalking that up to not enough aioli sauce. I'd happily eat it again just as it was!
The restaurant offers seating inside and outside (with ocean views as you are right across the street from Waikiki) and was immaculate inside. While eating I watched one of the workers doing a very thorough cleaning job on the tables as people would finish and watched another one empty the trash can twice to make sure it never got too full. There was a surprising amount of attention to detail for what is really a fast food place.
Overall, we really enjoyed Wolfgang Puck Express and will be back here for sure.
