Kuan Yin Temple is the old Chinese Buddhist temple in Honolulu on the island of O'ahu. The building is full of incredible detail, inside and out and worth seeing for anyone who enjoys temples or even just architecture. Enjoy a stroll around while the incense they burn calms your worries away. It truly is a peaceful place and they welcome respectful visitors.
Located right next to Foster Botanical Garden, the temple is dedicated to Kuan Yin (also spelled Guanyin), the goddess of mercy. The botanical garden background only adds to the peacefulness of the property. Devotees burn (fake) paper money for good luck and prosperity and/or place fresh flowers (or fruit) on an altar to promote fertility.
Kuan Yin Temple has been here since 1880, in some form or another, with Kuan Yin taking center stage on the main altar. Apparently, Kuan Yin changed gender back in the 12th century and is often depicted (in other temples) as both male and female to show this figure's limitless transcendence beyond gender.
