Mantokuji Soto Mission is a Buddhist temple of the Soto Zen tradition of Japan located in the town of Paia on the northshore of Maui. This is the only Soto Zen Buddhist on the entire island and easy to find, just look for the cemetery and bell tower. Behind the mission is Paia Cemetery Beach.
The mission has been here on Maui for well over 100 years now and was originally founded in 1906 by Reverend Sokyo Ueoka who was the head minister of Tokujuan Soto Zen Temple in Honichi, Nuta Higashi Village, Toyota-gun (which is Mihara City), Hiroshima Prefecture. Reverend Sokyo Ueoka received the assignment to become a visiting minister to Japanese immigrants in Hawaii and Mantokuji Soto Mission is the result of his efforts.
