The Puna Trail is a 2.5 mile long (each way), out and back style hiking trail located in the Keaau area (south of Hilo) on the east side of Hawaii's Big Island.

The trail is often considered to be a fairly easy hike for most people and doesn't have much of an elevation change along the way. The trailhead starts in a residential area in Keaau, see our map / directions page for exact location, and ends at the very hidden, very seclude Shipman Beach / Ha'ena Beach.

The Puna Trail follows an old carriage trail that was one the link between various fishing villages here in the Puna area. The hiking trail parallels the coastline and offers amazing ocean views as well as fun forested jungle areas.

Although this amazing beach is the payoff at the end, this is still a relatively long hike which means you'll want clothing (not just bathing suits) and real shoes (not just slippers / flip flops). You'll also need to bring plenty of water and read up on Hiking Safety & Essentials as well as apply plenty of sunscreen to Protect Yourself From Sunburn & Skin Cancer. You also won't find bathrooms or any facilities on the trail or at Shipman Beach / Ha'ena Beach. Hawaiian Monk Seal and Honu - The Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle sightings are common at this beach so give them plenty of space and don't mess with them or otherwise touch them.

As for that house behind the beach, it's the historic Shipman Estate and people still live there. The land behind the beach is all private land so be sure to respect their land and don't trespass on it.
