Onomea Trail and Donkey Trail are a set of very short hiking trails in the Papaikou area (that's a bit north of Hilo) on the east side of Hawaii's Big Island.

At only around 0.6 miles long (one way) and with elevation gains of only 140 feet or so, these hikes are more natural trials than hardcore hiking paths.

Even though they are easy for most hikers, be sure to read Hiking Safety & Essentials and take all of the usual hiking precautions. You'll also want to have mosquito repellant on this one (read Hawaii Mosquito Guide for more on that). Keep an eye on the weather as there is the potential for a Flash Flood along the stream here.

Our map / directions page marks the start of the southern trailhead for the Onomea Trail which is easy to access right off the road here. If you plan to visit Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden then you'll be better off parking in their lot (with your paid admission) and accessing these trails from the northern trailhead which is right across the street from their parking lot.

Regardless of which way you start, there will be a branch around the halfway point. If you start from the south and head north you can turn right at this branch and you'll head to Onomea Bay Beach. If coming from the other way you'll stay to your left for Onomea Bay Beach. Take the other branch and you'll simply end up at the opposite trailhead where you can easily hike back the way you came.

Note that while this is an easy hike, there are parts that can be a bit steep and slippery so process with caution.
