The Manuka Nature Trail is a 2.1 mile long, loop trail with an elevation gain of around 450 feet. The trail runs through the Manuka Natural Area Reserve but is actually access from the adjacent Manuka State Wayside Park.

To get here, you'll drive to Manuka State Wayside Park, as marked on our map / directions page, via the Mamalahoa Highway. The park is just west of the Ocean View area. Follow the park road into the parking area and then follow the signs to the Manuka Nature Trail trailhead.

The trail is said to be of moderate difficulty but seasoned hikers will likely consider it to be more on the easy side.

As the trail begins you'll proceed gently uphill through the Manuka Natural Area Reserve and will see ancient lava flows, various plant species, and cultural sites along the way as you gain around 450 feet in height. At the top is a pit crater and then you'll work your way back down.

As with any hike, we strongly advise you to read up on Hiking Safety & Essentials and would also recommend mosquito repellant here (see our Hawaii Mosquito Guide) as this area tends to have a lot of mosquitos. The weather here is often cool as you work your way through the forest.
