Kaheawai Trail is a 6.5 mile long (each way), out and back style hiking trail in the Ocean View on the south side of Hawaii's Big Island. The trailhead starts just off of the Mamalahoa Highway, just a bit east of Manuka State Wayside Park (where parking is available), and heads down to the ocean.
The beginning of the trail starts at about 1,950 feet above sea level and the trail will take you right down to sea level over the next 6.5 miles. If you're doing this trail both ways you can expect a moderately difficult hike due to the length, elevation changes, and rocky (lava) terrain.
Another option is to hike down to the ocean and have somebody in a 4x4 pick you up at the bottom as the trail parallels a 4x4 only road to the bottom. Just be warned that the road is a true 4x4 only road and not something you can do in your rental car.
There is no fresh water along the route and this is a long and exposed trail so be sure to bring plenty to drink. On that note, read up on Hiking Safety & Essentials before heading out.
