The Ke Ala Loa O Maui, or Piilani Trail (and sometimes even known as the Wai'anapanapa Coast Trail South), is a relatively short trail at 1.5 miles long, each way (3 miles round trip).

This is an out and back style trail with minor, 200 foot elevation gains along its coastal route.

The trail itself is mostly barren lava rock and offers some incredible views of the ocean, the coastal area of Hana, and Haleakala National Park. The trail is considered to be a moderately difficult trail.

The trailhead starts just southeast of Hana Airport, right at Wai'anapanapa State Park and Wai'anapanapa Black Sand Beach so bring a camera because these are photos you'll want to keep. You'll also find plenty of amenities here which include restrooms and picnic tables.

For those that want to really enjoy this trail and Wai'anapanapa State Park, you can camp here (with permit) in your own tent or rent one of the available cabins. As with all hikes, be sure to first read Hiking Safety & Essentials.
