The Kaunala Trail is a 5 mile long loop trail near Oahu's north shore. Although the trail portions are often said to be closer to 2.5 miles, when you factor in the entire loop and include the paved and dirty road areas and walk to the parking area expect closer to 5 miles overall.

The hike isn't overly difficult and has an overall elevation gain of around 600 feet. It combines ridge and valley trails and offers some amazing views of the Waianae Mountain Range as well as the north shore.

Getting here isn't difficult but can be confusing. From the Kamehameha Highway, turn mauka (towards the mountain) on Pupukea Road (you'll see a Foodland on the corner). Follow that road up and all the way to the end or consider stopping at the Pu'u o Mahuka Heiau State Historic Site along the way as well.

At the end of the road is a gate and Camp Pupukea so you should be able to park along this area, but avoid any places with no parking signs. Follow the dirt road on foot for about 3/4 of a mile and you'll find the trailhead on your left. Sign in at the hunter / hiker check in mailbox. Follow the yellow and brown signs from there.

Along the way are various switchbacks and stream crossings so always be cautious and aware of the possibility of a Flash Flood. Remember that all fresh water streams here can contain Leptospirosis. Be sure to also read up on Hiking Safety & Essentials before you go.

Note that this trail may only be open on weekends as well as state and national holidays.
