The Hilo Nursery Arboretum was actually transformed from an animal quarantine station into an arboretum back in 1920. It's still here today and you can stroll around the big trees for free. At one time they had over 1000 trees on the 19 acre property to see which trees would be best suited to Hawaii.
Today, there are around 50 species of plants and trees which include cacao trees, breadfruit trees, bird of paradise, macadamia nut trees, and many more. There aren't any guided tours but you can come and explore on your own. If you are really into trees then you'll enjoy this place more than most, and you may want to stop in the office to pick up a guide map to help identify some of the trees.
