The Kalapana Viewing Area is located just outside of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park at the end of Hwy 130. It is a viewing section overlooking the Kalapana flow from a distance. It's managed by Hawaii County (not the National Parks Service). There is no charge to enter and watch the flow from the viewing area. If you want a closer viewing of the Kalapana Lava Flow, you can make the 10-mile roundtrip hike from the end of Chain of Craters Road in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (There's a fee of $20 per car to enter). Evening viewing hours are from 4 PM to 10 PM. Cars will not be admitted in after 8 pm. For information on current viewing conditions, Call 808-961-8093 for updates.
