The Kokee Natural History Museum is located in Waimea Canyon and Kokee State Park and should be your first stop in the park. The knowledgeable people who work here will help you plan your hikes and give you advice on what to see and do here.
They're open everyday with free admissions though they have a donation box at the door and would like to see at least $1 per person. That's beyond fair so maybe drop in a few extra dollars to help out their cause considering they do not receive any government funding to keep this place going.
In addition to great advice, you'll also find a variety of natural and cultural history exhibits here. You'll also find a gift shop onsite that offers a variety of Hawaiian books, local arts and crafts, and various gift and souvenir items.
