Matt Anderson's Take
Gunstock Ranch is a place to experience Hawaii as Paniolo or Hawaiian Cowboy. They have horseback rides for riders of all ages and skill levels. They have pony rides for the kids and advance rides for exploring the space toward the mauka.

Also, Gunstock Ranch can provide a location for special events. Also, they offer an aquatic program teaching swim lessons for infants, toddlers, children, and adults. The lessons can be private, semi-private, or small classes. Various Red Cross training courses such as CPR certification are taught as well.

A visit to Gunstock Ranch contrasts the many activities one thinks about when visiting the North Shore of Oahu. Instead of sandy beaches and touristy food trucks, Gunstock Ranch offers a beautiful horseback ride toward the mountains behind Laie. The ranch is comfortably rugged with large open areas for parking and excellent stables for its well-treated horses.

After signing a few disclaimers, we were asked about our previous experience riding horses. Mine was almost zero except for a country ride with my uncle back in the 80s. I was thrown off. Not a pleasant memory. Needless to say, I had some apprehension about riding, but some friends encouraged me to go and overcome this fear.

We were given instruction how to mount, ride, and maintain control of the horse. It was interesting that we were told that you can't tell a horse what to do, but you can ask. After all, these creatures are large and could buck you or take off running if they wanted to. So I gently tapped my feet and made a "tsk" sound and sure enough, my horse "Cowboy" began to walk. Nice.

There was a group of about 10 of us who headed off with 2 informative guides who made me feel a sense of security as we rode off on the trail. Within a few minutes, Cowboy and I had built a relationship. He gently escorted me up the trail as I'm sure he had hundreds of times before. Cowboy followed the other horses slowly and sure-footed. Interestingly, many of the horses on Gunstock Ranch originally came from different places on the mainland.

The terrain was mildly sloped with different vegetation along the way. Some parts were lush with tropical foliage, and other were lined with trees and brush. The ride was fortunately mostly canopied with trees, which provided plenty of shade. After about 45 minutes, we arrived at our destination which was a flat open area with a fantastic view of the ocean in the distance. We gave a guide our camera and he took several pictures of us as we pretended to be authentic paniolos (Hawaiian cowboys).

As I looked off and enjoyed the vista, I thought about the relationship man has with horses and how good it was. I thought about how I wish I was more connected with nature instead of being tethered to electronic devices all of the time. And best of all was what I didn't think about. All of the cares and concerns that affect me every day. It was a time for gratitude and spending some precious time in nature with a beautiful horse.

Heading back down the trail, my fears were long gone. I felt at ease with Cowboy and even did a short gallop. As you can tell, I'm now a fan of horseback riding and look forward to my next visit.

We arrived at 10 for our 10:30 ride at Gunstock Ranch. The sprawling ranch in the rolling hills is lush and charming with peacocks and a petting zoo as you drive up. We checked in at the rustic check-in stand and had a few minutes to walk around and chat with the other riders at the picnic tables under the shady trees. After a quick lesson from our guide, we were loaded onto our horses. They make it easy for you as you step up on a platform next to your horse and just lift your leg over and sit down gently on the saddle.

We headed off down the trail with one guide in the lead and another at the rear of the group. The trail was beautiful, lush, and green. Although it was a hot day, the trail was mostly shady and kept us cool. We passed cows grazing and laying in the shade. There were other horses roaming and an area with several peacocks. The guides were friendly and informative, chatting with us as we rode along. The horses are obviously well cared for as they are content and responsive. My horse Kihei was awesome. He was responsive to my lead when I lead him to the shady side of the trail or around a branch. One tip they tell you is don’t let your horse eat or you’ll be struggling with them trying to graze. The first time mine tried, I reined him in and he didn’t try it again.

The trail slowly meandered upward and we arrived at a lookout with amazing views. We stopped here where the guides patiently took photos of each of us riders with our own cameras.

The return is just as beautiful. Since you are facing out, you see more of the ocean and rolling fields. It is definitely one of the most beautiful and peaceful horseback rides I’ve ever been on. They also have an advanced ride if you are a more experienced rider and want a faster-paced ride. I highly recommend taking a ride at Gunstock Ranch to experience the gorgeous countryside and views astride these wonderful creatures.

Gunstock Ranch is a beautiful place with friendly and knowledgeable staff and many beautiful and friendly horses. At first, we were worried that a storm was coming in, but it turned out to be perfect weather at the ranch. After a short informational spiel, we mounted our horses and headed out on the trail. I rode Scarlett who was sweet and very easy to ride. We got along great and I trusted her enough to be able to relax and let her do her thing (they know what to do). The ride was about 45 minutes or so to a hilltop with a beautiful view of the surrounding area.

The guides helped stage everyone and their horses to get a perfect couple or group photo. We spent about 20 minutes enjoying the view, snapping pictures, and swapping stories with the friendly guides. The guides were very patient and helped assist with horses that wanted to stop for a snack or relax. The ride back was a slightly different route partly shaded partly sunny. The trail was gentle overall and great for all ages and ability levels. One of the guides informed me that they also do advanced rides for those with more riding experience (30 or so rides) and those provide a faster ride where horses are able to trot, canter, and even gallop.

Our trail ride was perfectly suitable for novices but those who are interested in a more adventurous ride can inquire about the advanced opportunities. I was very impressed with the guides and their love and appreciation of their horses. You can tell that the horses live a relaxing and happy life at Gunstock Ranch. Overall, I thought this was a perfect way to spend a morning getting some sun, seeing more of the ranch land, and meeting friendly people and horses. Highly recommend to anyone who loves horses, nice knowledgeable staff, and beautiful landscapes.

FYI: Be sure to wear lots of sunscreen and/or a hat as it can be pretty hot and sunny on the trail. Those that burn easily should cover their shoulders and wear a t-shirt or large hat. As always, pants are a must with horseback riding. I also brought a water bottle and they attached a holder to the saddle which was convenient. Plenty of opportunities to take photos on this slower paced ride so bring a small camera or smartphone!

The 3 things I love most about Gunstock is the friendly and knowledgeable staff, the authenticity of the ride (this is not a "tourist trap" - lots of rides to choose from including an advanced ride) and the amazing views of the Windward Coastline. All this makes for a unique and one of a kind experience that is well worth the time and money.
