Kaumana Caves is a fun adventurous activity for those who aren't afraid of the dark and you'll find them located just outside of Hilo. Once you arrive, be sure to bring your valuables since there are a lot of thefts reported here (read more on Vehicle Theft In Hawaii).

You'll take a set of steep steps with handrails down to the cave entrance. You'll need to bring a flashlight since these cave are not illuminated with tracking lights. You can stop by Costco or Walmart and pick one up for a few bucks.

The caves are cool, damp and dark. There are basically 2 tunnels - the one on the left is a bit easier since the surfaces are flatter and the openings are larger. There is water flowing from underground streams, so you might get a little wet, but you can hop over it easily.

The tunnel on the right is longer, but there are parts that require stooping or crawling to get through. This tunnel is certainly doable for anyone in decent shape, just not the best choice if you have small children with you.

There is plenty of parking but bring water, hiking shoes (not flip flops / slippers), and a flashlight. You can experience the whole are in about an hour. Kaumana Caves will satisfy those who were disappointed with the Thurston Lava Tube (Nahuku) at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which is has lights, a lot of crowds, and is far more touristy.
