Honouliuli National Monument is the newest national park to the state of Hawaii. It is located on the site of the Honouliuli Internment Camp.
Honouliuli Internment Camp was opened in 1943 as an internment camp for Japanese Americans, European Americans, and resident aliens in Hawai'i. It was the largest and longest running confinement site during WWII. Japanese American internees nicknamed it jigoku dani, hell valley.
On February 19, 2015 the Honouliuli Internment Camp was designated as Honouliuli National Monument by Presidential Proclamation by President Barack Obama.
