In 2000 Ala Kahakai was established as National Historic Trail to preserve and protect this piece of Native Hawaiian culture. It is maintained by the National Park Service.
This trail is 175 miles of segmented trails along the coastline. Ala kaha kai means "shoreline trail" in the Hawaiian Language.
This park if free, but you may need to pay for park entrance fees for portions of the trail that lie within the National Park boundaries that collect fees. (Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park & Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park).
