Buho Cocina y Cantina serves Mexican food but it's more of a modern, higher end take on Mexican rather than the classic Mexican style of most restaurants. The restaurant is located on the roof (4th floor) of The Waikiki Shopping Plaza so most of the seating is open air, but they do have some indoor tables as well.

The menu offers a large amount of choices that includes appetizers, entrees, desserts, and plenty of alcoholic drink options and happy hour specials. We started with homemade chips and salsa that seemed pricey at around $7. Then I tasted them and could see that they really are homemade and surprisingly good (and refills are free). They offer a few salsas and all were tasty, but the standard one they offer was my favorite. I could drink a bowl of it.

For an entree, our server (Nicholas) mentioned that the Brisket Enchiladas were one of the most popular dishes so I went with that and was very pleased. For around $19 I received a plate with 3 enchiladas, rice, and beans. The enchiladas were filled with tender brisket, onions, and cheese and were incredibly good. Even the rice and beans were better than I expected. Just all around great flavors.

As it turns out, Buho tries to source local ingredients whenever possible as well as fresh and high end ingredients which I like a lot. It all tasted very fresh and delicious. The vibe here is also really good, a fun place to relax during the day and probably a fun place to come for drinks and food at night. The service was also excellent.

I'm already looking forward to coming back! Don't let the prices keep you away, it maybe be a tiny bit pricier than your typical hole in the wall Mexican joint but the food here is leaps beyond typical Mexican food. Besides, it won't be much more expensive than a hole in the wall place anyhow (this is Hawaii people!). Considering the quality and quantity of food I got (which filled me up), I'd say that the prices seemed very reasonable. It's an easy five stars for me.
