Vjs North Shore Dogs Burgers - Restaurants On Oahu Haleiwa, Hawaii

VJ's North Shore Dogs & Burgers looked so promising with it's delicious smelling food and smoke pouring out of their grill. It attracted me over the other nearby food trucks in this area so I had to try it out. Clearly their specialty was burgers with grass fed beef being their claim to fame. They also offer hot dogs, fish tacos, and various side items.

So I tried their normal burger called Da Kine for $8, add cheese for $1, and then add some bacon on that bad boy for $3. $1 for a slice of cheese? $3 for two strips of bacon. Pricey. When asked if I want lettuce, onion, and tomato on it I said, "no, no veggies" (hey, I'm a purist). He confirmed my order and all sounded good.

A while later I got my burger and all the veggies were on it. Fine, I'll pick them off. Three bites in and I realized there was no cheese on it at all. Well, at least the burger was delicious! Unfortunately, it was also really small. It's a 1/3 pound patty but it felt far smaller. So $12 for a burger (before any drink, tax, or tip) that was really tiny just feels far too expensive. Get one of their specialty burgers and a side items (chips, etc) and expect to spend several dollars more.

When all is said and done, if I'm spending $15+ from a food truck I should have received enough food to fill me up. This didn't come close. I could have easily eaten two more. But like I said, the burger was delicious!

In addition to the screw ups on my burger and the high prices, this place has a serious fly problem. Flies were buzzing all over the place like some crazy swarm. I've never seen so many in one place and I was literally swatting them away from my burger with one hand while trying to eat it with the other. I've never seen anything like it so they need to get that situation figured out before I'd ever suggest anyone eat here. I don't care how good your food is, if you have a fly problem like this then it's not worth eating there.

Get that fly issue figured out, give me a better value for the prices you are asking, and this place is easily 4 stars or possibly even much higher. Until then, 3 stars at best.
