Aiopio Beach is part of the Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park and at the northwest end of Honokohau Marina & Small Boat Harbor. This is a great spot to view Honu - The Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle since they frequent this area, just remember to keep your distance and not to mess with them.

In ancient times this was actually a fish trap. A high tide would come along and the fish would easy swim in and essentially get stuck which made for easy catching. Sort of the ancient form of shooting fish in a barrel.

Because of the sea wall that would trap the fish in, the water here is usually very calm and a good place for smaller kids to play and swim. It can be good place to hangout and relax or to check out the various tidepools. Otherwise, the beach is kind of forgettable and not that impressive.

Parking is available at the Honokohau Marina & Small Boat Harbor and you'll find a beach access sign near the open field. Just follow the short trail along the ocean and it will lead you to this Aiopio Beach. There's a visitor center and restrooms nearby. The trail is simple and feels like a well preserved beach path from the old days. Unfortunately, much road noise can be heard and ruins the otherwise peaceful experience.
