This area was originally the Kona Airport but once the island outgrew this small airport they built a larger airport a bit further north which is the Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole (KOA). This old Kona Airport was then turned into a state park, and a nice one at that, complete with a beach. The beach here is known as Old A's Beach.

This is an interesting place to visit as the old runway is now the road you drive in on and park next to. There is a huge grassy area with trees for shade and picnic tables. You'll also find baseball fields, a roller hockey rink, a skate park, a walking path, covered pavilions, and even showers and bathrooms.

Because there is so much to do here, beyond the beach, it can get pretty busy here on weekends when locals flock in. If there is an event, like a fair, expect it to be quite crowded as well. But during the week when nothing is going on it won't be used much at all.

Back to that beach. While it is a nice beach and is sandy in parts, the shoreline is quite rocky and because of the currents and reefy bits it's not a beach you'll want to swim at. Snorkeling can be very good in some areas but that's best left to advanced snorkelers.
