Hookena Beach Park is a gray sand (salt and pepper) beach that's an excellent beach for families. You will find it in the Honaunau area on the west side of Hawaii's Big Island.
When the ocean is calm it's a good beach for kids to play in the water as it has some protected tide pool areas. Snorkeling can be good off to the east side (left as you face the ocean) if the water is calm.
Camping is allowed here though there is a small fee for the permit which is required. In terms of amenities, Hookena Beach has you covered with bathrooms, showers, pavilions, picnic tables, fire pits, and potable water. It's a great beach to spend a day at.
