Rocky shoreline with some tide pools. Locals hangout. Move along.

• Type: Shady • Parking: Good / Plenty
• Good For: Snorkeling

Matt Anderson's Take
Lehia Beach probably isn't the beach you're looking for. There is no sandy beach area here, just a rocky shoreline and rocky beach area.

It does offer a lot of shade from trees and could be a nice place to hang out and enjoy the view. There are also some tide pool areas that form that may be neat to explore. That's really about it.

You should know that this is a place where locals hangout. We saw quite a few just hanging out and drinking as well as a lot of dogs (unleashed pit bulls for example). Bottom line? You can do a lot better so move along.

Let the locals have this one, you can do so much better pretty much anywhere else.

My least favorite of the Hilo beaches. Although there is plenty of shaded parking, Lehia Beach Park is local - very local - hangout. You'll see people that bring their cars here, crank up their stereos, and enjoy an adult beverage. You might smell pakalolo in the air here as well.

Not a place to swim, or surf. There are boulders to sit on and look out at the water. I guess this place is enjoyed if you want a bit of seclusion in the Hilo area, but it really looks like the place where the bad kids hung out in high school.

There's also nasty looking porta-potty that should be used by no one. It is dog-friendly, so that's a plus for pet owners. But just about all the other beaches in Hilo are far better than Lehia Beach Park.
