Matt Anderson's Take
Richardson's Ocean Park, or Richardson Beach Park is it's sometimes called, is a good spot for swimming and snorkeling when the ocean is calm. There are tide pools and a lot of shade. There can also good surfing offshore.

The beach gets its name from Elsa and George Richardson who built the house in the early 1920s. The house is now an educational center for recreational ocean and marine studies with the University of Hawaii Sea Grant Extension program.

This park has plenty of facilities like a lifeguard, showers, bathrooms, picnic areas, and plenty of parking.

Richardson’s ocean park is beautiful. However the day we went it was pretty rough so we were unable to swim or do any snorkeling. I’m sure on a calm day it is probably a great location for your water adventures. I would definitely go back on our next trip as long as it is a calmer day.

Richardson's is a one of the few beaches in Hilo where there is sand to lay on. There are quite a bit of rocks closer to the shore but nice when you get further out into the ocean. The best times to go to Richardson's would be during the week days because it gets very packed during the weekends and difficult to find parking.

Love this beach park. There are several beaches along this section of Hilo that have reefs and warm water vents that make for a fun time. There are picnic tables, and shaded areas to hang out. The snorkeling is really good here, and you're almost assured to see a turtle. Great spot for swimming, and it's naturally protected from ocean swell. It is a popular spot, so there might be a few crowds and a search for parking, but it's worth it.

Richardson's Beach Park is a large park with an educational center, pavilions, picnic benches, bathrooms, and showers. It has a few ponds throughout the park (not for swimming) and has lots of water access. The sandy beach part of Richardson's is small, but there are lots of rocky areas where you can easily get in the water. This beach is very popular and very busy on the weekends. It is great for paddle boarding , swimming, snorkeling and just hanging out and getting some sun. Great for families. The water is usually calm and the sandy area is good for kids.
