Plantation Tavern serves food that represents the Hawaiian plantation cultures. Their menu features locally grown and organic produce and meats and offers local style food with a modern twist. The environment is clean and casual, with modern furnishings. The cuisine is more sophisticated than your typical local food restaurant - and the prices are a little higher. The quality of the food was quite good. We ordered the Portuguese Bean Soup, Garlic Rice, Garlic Bok Choy, Lechon Kawali, Manila Clams. Let's break it down.
The Portuguese Bean Soup was flavorful and tasty. I would definitely order it again. The Garlic Fried Rice - was ok, but didn't live up to it's namesake. The flavor was too subtle; I couldn't really taste the garlic, so it was a bit of a disappointment. The Garlic Bok Choy was a little overcooked and somewhat flavorless. It was good, but nothing amazing. The Lechon Kawali was delicious. The skin was crispy and tasty. This is a pork belly dish, so it's a fatty piece of meat. Be advised - If you cut away the fat, you're throwing away about a third of the dish. Personally, I love the fatty part and gobbled it down. Very tasty with large portions - my favorite dish of the evening.
The Manilla Clams were fresh tasting, and served with grilled French bread. The broth was good, and the clams were cooked perfectly - not overdone or chewy. Very good.
Our adult beverage was the "Guava Mule", which is made with vodka, ginger beer, and guava. Very refreshing with a tangy fruity flavor. loved it.
For dessert we had the Gelato Filled Puffs and the Brownie with Vanilla Ice Cream. Although the Puffs were tasty, it's hard to beat a delicious brownie with vanilla ice cream. So ono.
The service was very good. Our hostess spent time with us to make sure we knew what we were ordering, and made suggestions as well. My friend ordered a very specific type of Martini drink, and the bartender came out to personally make sure that she got the order right. I was very impressed with the quality of the service.
I will go back - the food is very good, but unfortunately it's pretty expensive. Most items on the menu are ala carte - if you add a side dish and fried rice, that can add another $10 to your bill. I understand that organic vegetables are not cheap here in Hawaii, but this is local food and if the prices were a little more reasonable, I'd visit Plantation Tavern more frequently. I hope they have success since there are very few good quality restaurants in Kapolei.
