In 1847, Washington Place was the new capitol of the Hawaiian Kingdom, ruled by King Kamehameha the Great’s son Kamehameha III. It was originally built as a home for Clipper Ship Captain, John Dominis who was originally from Schenectady, New York.
This residence is best known as the home of Hawaii’s last reigning monarch, Queen Lili’ukolani. She married Capt. John Dominis’ son and lived there for the next 55 years (until her passing in 1917).
American Commissioner Anthony TenEyck, with Mrs. Dominis’ approval, named the property for the first United States President. In 1922, it became the official residence of Hawaii’s Governors. Washington Place also became a National Historic Landmark in 2007.
Today, there are tours available, and it's an organization that anyone can donate to.
