The Pu'u O Kona Loop Trail is a 5 mile long (roughly), loop style hiking trail in the Honolulu area of O'ahu. The trail is for advanced hikers who want a challenging trail, don't mind heights and narrows ridges, and enjoy climbing sections. This is not a family friendly hike in any way.

Our map / directions page marks the trailhead so you can GPS your way here easily. By car, you'll head to Kuli'ou'ou Road and then make a right on Kala'au Place before Kuli'ou'ou Road ends. At the end of Kala'au Place you'll go beyond the gate but rather than heading forward you'll take a right up the paved road (not accessible by car at this point) to the big water tank at the end. The trailhead starts just to the right of the the water tank. Although it will start in a shady, forested area it will quickly be exposed so you'll want to wear sunscreen to Protect Yourself From Sunburn & Skin Cancer.

From here the Pu'u O Kona Trail will loop around the Kuli'ou'ou Ridge. It can be seen on the western ridge of the Kuli'ou'ou Valley. The Kuli'ou'ou Ridge Trail is on the eastern ridge of the valley. Along the way there will be several ropes to help you climb up but be warned that many of these ropes are weathered and may not be safe.

You'll also run into very narrow ridges with very steep drops on both sides and even some unstable land in areas as well as paths that are often overgrown and not well defined as you gain around 2,200 feet in elevation. Because of this added danger, this is a tough hike to recommend to anyone but plenty will ignore our advice and hike this one anyhow. If you ignore our advice, be safe! Don't forget to read Hiking Safety & Essentials before you go as well.
