Ho'omaluhia Botanical Gardens is a spectacular botanical gardens with amazing views of the Ko'olau Mountains. It's not your typical quarter mile walk on a dirt path through the plants. At 400 acres, this place is massive!

They opened in 1982 and feature plantings from tropical regions all around the world, grouped geographically. The name Ho'omaluhia means "to make a place of peace and tranquility." And tranquil it is. What a relaxing place to spend an afternoon and enjoy a picnic.

If you're a camper then you'll love camping here. They allow camping from Monday to Friday. Reservations are required.

If you are looking to cast a line, they allow fishing here on Saturday and Sunday only, between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. It's catch and release only. They supply bamboo poles with barb-less hooks, you bring the bait.

Check in for the fishing at the visitor center and then take a 20 minute hike to the lake. Walking shoes, insect repellent, and rain gear are recommended.

What's best about this peaceful paradise is that admission is free. They're closed on Christmas Day (December 25) and New Years Day (January 1).
