Full Description
Ho'omaluhia Botanical Gardens is a spectacular botanical gardens with amazing views of the Ko'olau Mountains. It's not your typical quarter mile walk on a dirt path through the plants. At 400 acres, this place is massive!

They opened in 1982 and feature plantings from tropical regions all around the world, grouped geographically. The name Ho'omaluhia means "to make a place of peace and tranquility." And tranquil it is. What a relaxing place to spend an afternoon and enjoy a picnic.

If you're a camper then you'll love camping here. They allow camping from Monday to Friday. Reservations are required.

If you are looking to cast a line, they allow fishing here on Saturday and Sunday only, between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. It's catch and release only. They supply bamboo poles with barb-less hooks, you bring the bait.

Check in for the fishing at the visitor center and then take a 20 minute hike to the lake. Walking shoes, insect repellent, and rain gear are recommended.

What's best about this peaceful paradise is that admission is free. They're closed on Christmas Day (December 25) and New Years Day (January 1).

Came upon a sign for this unbelieveable park. Followed the road to the end turned around back to a spot we liked. It was going to a world of yesterday. The beauty, the air all the green and the silence .All you can is the wind whispering through the trees and other plants. The view is clear and fantastic - blues, greens, and others. You must go see and feel the tropics at their best. Like nature wanted.

Take a lunch and drinks and a couple of beach towels to lay on the grass, Don't forget your sunglasses, sunscreen, and your camera. We go back each time we return. It's a nice quiet drive and a day you won't forget. Oh yeah, you might see animals in there, after all it is nature as it is.... start planning now.

PS: there are bathrooms, picnic tables, water, and a visitors center. Back to the animals, you might see a pig walking around, they are NOT a bother , just leave them alone; after all it is their home and just out for a snack.

You don't have to travel far from Honolulu for a tropical outer island experience on Oahu. Ho'omaluhia Botanical Gardens has so much to offer. Stunning views of the Koolau Mountain Range, a large open park to explore, a tranquil pond, and full facilities. Nature lovers will appreciate that native plants are identified with tags.

Midweek there are few visitors, so you can almost have the park to yourself. Ho'omaluhia Botanical Gardens is lush and beautiful - it feels like you're on vacation in Kauai.
